Common Risks Across Mobile Apps
Stranger Contact
Many apps allow children to receive messages, friend requests, comments or invites from people they do not know.
Private Messaging
Private messages can become secretive quickly, especially when chats move between apps or use disappearing messages.
Location Sharing
Some apps can reveal where a child is, where they spend time, or patterns around school, home and activities.
Camera, Photos & Microphone Access
Apps may request access to photos, camera, microphone, contacts or location. Parents should check app permissions regularly.
Moving Off-Platform
A common warning sign is when someone encourages a child to move from one app to another for a more private conversation.
Warning Signs Parents Should Watch For
- Becoming secretive about phone use or certain apps.
- Quickly hiding screens or switching apps when someone walks in.
- New online contacts becoming very important very quickly.
- Being asked to move chats to another app.
- Receiving gifts, compliments or pressure to keep secrets.
- Being asked for photos, videos, location details or personal information.
- Becoming anxious, withdrawn or upset after using an app.
Universal Parent Checklist
- Check which apps are installed and recently downloaded.
- Review privacy settings inside each app.
- Turn off location sharing where it is not needed.
- Check camera, microphone, contacts and photo permissions.
- Use parental controls such as Google Family Link or Apple Screen Time.
- Restrict app downloads and age-inappropriate content.
- Talk regularly about strangers, private messages and moving chats to other apps.
- Teach your child how to block, report and ask for help.
- Make sure children know they will not be blamed for speaking up.
